One battery can pollute 60,000 liters of water.

Household Hazardous Waste

Part of the waste generated by households can be hazardous to the environment and to human health, as it contains certain harmful chemicals. Some of these products include: paint, used batteries, pesticides, cleaners, stains, varnishes, and motor oil.

Hazardous Household Waste - Green Tips

Purchase:

  • Ask friends, family and neighbours if they have any leftover products that you can use.

  • Purchase only what you need, buying in bulk you might end throwing items away later, costing both money and the environment.

  • Choose products that are chemical free or look for substitutes.

  • Use rechargeable batteries so you don't have to keep buying (and throwing away) batteries.

Usage:

  • Always keep them in the original container. This will help to identify the product and chemicals it contains. If the container starts to corrode repackage the item and clearly label it.

  • Never store chemicals in used food containers without clear labeling! Somebody might accidentally ingest them which can lead to many health problems, including death.

  • Never mix chemicals as they might react, causing ignition or explosion. Moreover, chemicals that are mixed might not be reusable or recycable.

Disposal:

  • If you have left over products offer them to friends, family and neighbours for use. Community groups will take donated products, for example, theater groups are often in need of paint.

  • Take your used car battery to a respectable garage that has the facilities to recycle and reuse it.

  • Look at the label for any disposal directions and strictly follow them!

  • Allow water-based liquids to evaporate. For non water-based products use sawdust or cat litter to absorb excess liquid.

  • Ask in shops or take the remaining products directly to a special disposal facility. Make sure it is carefully packaged to prevent leaking.

  • If you have to dispose of paint, see our tips in Interior Decorating.
